The Twitter Bird and Harley the Mouse

by Nic

This post announces a new project that I’ve been working on and it’s a great example of how you can turn your already existing skills and knowledge into an online product and then use internet marketing strategies to promote it.  It’s best introduced with a story.

So, one Saturday afternoon back in 2006 I was entertaining my 3 year old and had run out of things to do – I actually had to use my imagination to come up with something.  And so I did.  Using his drawing pad, I drew a picture of a mouse and then made up a story about the mouse.  As it happens, he really liked the story – and the picture.

Fast forward to earlier this year and I found that drawing.  I’d also been talking with a friend of mine, Emma, who is a graphic designer, about how she was beginning to do children’s book illustrations.  When I found this drawing, I knew we had a project we could work on together.

I gave Em the story outline and also the single drawing I had of the mouse on crumpled paper.  And then she worked her magic and completely brought my mouse to life.  We decided to call the mouse Harley, named after my son who inspired the story.  You should see the illustrations – they are gorgeous.

We’re just finalizing the text now and Emma is finalizing the illustrations.  We’ll get an editor to look over the whole thing and then we’ll release it to the public using all of the internet marketing strategies I’ve been learning about and using over the last year.

Amongst all this, I will have become a children’s book author and Emma will have become a children’s book illustrator – and how cool is that…The only thing between an idea and an outcome is a decision followed by some action.

Emma was kind enough to release this illustration of Harley the mouse with the twitter bird – and you can expect a few more like this.

I love how the connections we have in our lives can really be understood when we take the time to just ask the most simple and caring questions of them and what can eventuate from this.
To have invited Emma to expose herself to her dreams and how the simple art of father and son story telling can become a collaboration of hearts and minds and dreams is one of the wonders of the world. P2A – conjours up visions of J.K.Rowling
